I just had the most interesting discussion with a doctor about food addiction and symptoms of food addiction (overeating, bingeing, food cravings, and emotional eating). This doctor’s perspective was that food addiction doesn’t exist. He believed that women that are over 200 lbs. just need to practice greater willpower and read more about how to control their weight. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
And then I looked him squarely in the eye and firmly said – NO.
I shared with him that I lived with my mom who suffered from food addiction for years.
When she passed away in 2016 – we couldn’t find a normal sized coffin to bury her in.
After things calmed down a bit, I had the courage to go through mom’s things. What I found stunned me.
She had three dresser draws FILLED with diet books and magazine clippings. These books and magazine clippings dated back to the 1970’s.
That day, I realized that my mom knew MORE about calorie counting than the average person.
My mom knew MORE about the latest diets than the average person.
So it wasn’t about willpower, because she had lost over 60 lbs. at one time.
So what was it?
It was her mind.
There are two ingredients added to foods that react with the brain the same way it reacts in a drug addict’s brain.
Second, it’s more than willpower. Scientist have discovered that there are certain tools that can reprogram the brain to help people lose weight.
Soo, did my doctor friend change his mind?
Not completely….. But, he did say that he will look at his overweight patients differently.
I consider this to be a win!!😁 Why?
Because this one doctor treats hundreds of patients that are overweight.
And if doctor’s visits can be made easier and less stressful for both the doctor and the patient because the doctor understands his patients more – the patient gets better quality care!! It’s a win, win, for everyone!!!🙂
